About

Huich Goh learned Western classical violin from Lynette Lim in Singapore and Brian Blake in Melbourne, Australia. She also took part in pioneering music educator Vivian Goh's 'Fiddling for Fun' program, an initiative she established to promote the love of music playing in Singapore.

Somewhere along the way, Huich discovered jazz and loved the absolute freedom it had. The improvisation element captivated her. She also listened to a lot of Nigel Kennedy, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Shakti, L.Shankar (now L. Shenkar), Mahavishnu Orchestra, Zakir Hussain, and John McLaughlin. These artists, as well as many others, set her on a life-long quest to learn improvisation, to experiment with her instrument, to listen widely, and to explore as many musical worlds as possible.

Based in Melbourne, she has evolved a unique, experimental playing style that is based upon her exposure to music across the world - gypsy, jazz, blues, funk, folk, bluegrass, rock, post-rock, progressive rock, classical, Carnatic and Hindustanii classical music, Brazilian folk musics, Indonesian gamelan, Mexican music, and plenty more.

She is well-known both in Australia and overseas for her highly expressive, warm, and soulful playing, as well as her ability to seamingly fit into any musical context and improvise. She is particularly in demand as an avant-garde violinist and is involved in a few experimental noise/free jazz/krautrock collectives.

Huich's current projects include: the Electrodub Experiment (an open improvisation electronic dub collective), the Paul Kidney Experiment (psychedelic noise improvisation), Star/time (free jazz), her own improvisation ensemble Sahul Sakti, the boleros group Trago Amargo, and a flamenco folk music inspired duo with the guitarist Luke Koszański.

Huich has played with leading musicians in Australia, namely the Gambian singer Yusupha Nghum, Peter Dickson (guitarist), and Solomon Sissay. In India, she fell into the Indian underground music scene played with Booker prize nominee Jeet Thayil, Ari Jayaprakash, Chintan Kalra, Sandeep Madhavan, and Sanjeev Thomas.

 

Her career highlights include playing at the 2014 Saptak Music Festival, the 2014 Times Literary Festival in India, and playing with the Paul Kidney Experience to support Mudhoney on their Australian tour in 2023.

Huich is a state of continuous learning and exploring new sounds. Her deep interest in classical Indian music led her first to the Saptak Music School in India where she briefly learned Hindustanii music. After moving to Bangalore, she became a disciple of Mr. Sridar Narasimhan, a protegé of M.S. Gopalakrishnan. She studies this music just for pure enjoyment and sometimes you can hear flecks of her Carnatic music learnings in her playing.
